• ARTISTIC - expression through music, dance, folk art, handicraft, poetry, and literature;
• RESEARCH – the study of Appalachian people and places including history, place, identity, culture, way of life, and regional significance;
• PARTNERSHIP - strengthening cooperation among academia, grassroots groups, government agencies, community leaders, and other representatives in the region;

ENVIRONS

Dahlonega, Georgia
http://www.dahlonega.org/

Surrounded by the Chattahoochee National Forest, the North Georgia area is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, with endless places for hiking, mountain climbing, hunting, fishing, bird-watching, whitewater rafting, canoeing and camping. This area of North Georgia draws many visitors who enjoy its lush forests, stunning waterfalls and abundant wildlife.

Dahlonega is Cherokee for “yellow money” and is the site of the first major gold rush in the U.S. It is a quaint mountain town with a prominent public square with plenty of gift shops and restaurants. One of the nation’s 150 Preserve America communities, Dahlonega is in close proximity to beautiful waterfalls, the Appalachian Trail, and several rivers.

Founded in 1873, North Georgia College & State University has more than 5,000 students and is the second oldest university and the first to admit women in the state. Located in historic Dahlonega, Ga., North Georgia is one of only six senior military colleges in the United States, with its Corps of Cadets comprising 13 per cent of the undergraduate student population. North Georgia is a coeducational public university emphasizing strong liberal arts, as well as pre-professional, professional and graduate programs. The university offers more than 50 majors to prepare students for nearly any career. The campus is in easy walking distance to the town center, Dahlonega. Campus buildings in which conference activities will take place are on relatively level ground and in close proximity to each other. North Georgia will be on spring break during our visit and there will be plenty of convenient parking for us on the campus.
