U.S. Programs in Appalachian Studies
Helen Lewis taught the first interdisciplinary Appalachian studies course at Clinch Valley College in Southwest Virginia in the summer of 1969[1].

The following is a list of all programs in Appalachian studies, including masters programs, undergraduate majors, and undergraduate minors, as well as programs closely aligned with Appalachian studies subject matter and approaches ("related programs"). Click here to suggest additional programs.


Master of Arts Programs

Appalachian State University - Boone, North Carolina
Students pursuing the Master of Arts degree may choose between two concentrations, Appalachian Culture Area or Sustainable Development.

East Tennessee State University - Johnson City, Tennessee
ETSU offers a graduate curriculum in Appalachian Studies within their Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program.

Marshall University - Huntington, West Virginia
Marshall offers a graduate certificate in Appalachian studies. Marshall is home to the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Gender in Appalachia (CSEGA).


Majors in Appalachian Studies

Unless otherwise noted, all schools with an Appalachian Studies major also have an Appalachian Studies minor option.

Appalachian State University - Boone, North Carolina
Appalachian State offers a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Appalachian studies through their Center for Appalachian Studies.

Marshall University - Huntington, West Virginia
Marshall University offers a B.A. in Multidisciplinary Studies in which students can select Appalachian studies as an area of emphasis.
Marshall is home to the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Gender in Appalachia (CSEGA).

University of Kentucky - Lexington, Kentucky
UK offers a topical major and a
minor, which are coordinated through The Appalachian Center.

Virginia Tech - Blacksburg, Virginia
Virginia Tech offers an Interdisciplinary studies major with a concentration in Appalachian studies and an Appalachian studies minor.



Minors in Appalachian Studies

Berea College - Berea, Kentucky
The Appalachian Studies minor at Berea is coordinated through The Appalachian Center at Berea. Berea students may also choose to pursue an independent major in Appalachian studies under the guidance of the director of the Appalachian Center.

Concord College - Athens, West Virginia
Concord College lists an Appalachian studies minor as an option for both its B.A. and B.S. degree options.

Emory and Henry College - Emory, Virginia
E&H has a minor coordinated through its Appalachian Center for Community Service.

Eastern Kentucky University - Richmond, Kentucky
EKU offers a minor through its Center for Appalachian Studies.

East Tennessee State University - Johnson City, Tennessee
ETSU offers an Appalachian studies minor, coordinated through the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services (CASS).

Lees - McRae College - Banner Elk, North Carolina
The Appalachian studies minor at Lees-McRae is organized through the John B. Stephenson Center for Appalachian and Comparative Highland Studies.

Mars Hill College - Mars Hill, North Carolina
Mars Hill offers a regional studies minor and is home to the The Ramsey Center for Regional Studies.

Maryville College - Maryville, Tennessee
Maryville offers a minor in Appalachian studies.

Radford University - Radford, Virginia
Radford's minor in Appalachian studies is supported by its Appalachian Regional Studies Center.

Western Carolina University - Cullowhee, North Carolina
WCU's Appalachian studies minor is coordinated by its Mountain Heritage Center.

ETSU offers programs in Appalachian Scottish and Irish Studies (ASIS) and Bluegrass and Country Music.

Emory and Henry College - Emory, Virginia
The Public Policy and Community Service major and minor at E&H offers Appalachian studies as a focus area. The program is coordinated through Emory and Henry's Appalachian Center for Community Service.
