The Appalachian Studies Association was formed in 1977 by a group of scholars, teachers, and regional activists who believed that shared community has been and will continue to be important to those writing, researching, and teaching about Appalachia.

We invite participation in the 36th annual Appalachian Studies Conference organized by the Appalachian Studies Association. This year’s theme is “Communities in Action, Landscapes in Change.” We encourage innovative proposals that explore all types of communities across the Appalachian region—historical, contemporary, and imagined ones—and the landscapes and environmental spaces that impact, and are impacted by, those communities.

Howard Dorgan Silent Auction
To assist community groups and students in participating in the Appalachian Studies Conference, each year the ASA hosts the Howard Dorgan Silent Auction, the proceeds of which are used to fund conference scholarships. Scholarships allow students, presenters, teachers, and activists who need assistance paying conference registration fees. Howard Dorgan, former ASA President and Appalachian scholar, organized the first silent auction at the suggestion of Judith McCulloh of the University of Illinois Press. The first auction, held at the 1998 Conference in Boone, North Carolina, raised approximately $1,300 for scholarships. The ASA continues to hold the event, which has since been renamed in honor of the individual who first organized it, to assist with the paying of Conference registration fees.
Items that may be auctioned include signed copies of books by Appalachian authors, and any music, art work, or artifact from the Appalachian region worth at least ten dollars. All questions concerning the appropriateness of items or the auction itself may be addressed to Silent Auction Committee Co-Chairs Carol Baugh at carol.baugh@sinclair.edu or Philis Alvic at philis@philisalvic.info.
Previous Items have included: Books, handcrafted woodwork, tattoos and piercings, local crafts, pictures, poster collections, music cds, and many other items.
The 2011 Conference in Richmond, KY raised $2,564.00 for conference scholarships!

Joining the ASA is simply a matter of mailing a check along with contact information. Membership runs from Jan.1st through Dec. 31st. Annual membership includes conference information as well as subscriptions to the Journal of Appalachian Studies and Appalink, the ASA newsletter.
